Vietnam's first aluminum ingot production reduces its reliance on imported aluminum, potentially lowering domestic costs for downstream industries. The move could also strengthen Vietnam's position in global aluminum supply chains, though the impact on international aluminum prices is limited given the modest initial capacity.

On July 26, 2026, Vietnam produced its first domestically made aluminum ingots at the Dak Nong Aluminum Electrolysis Plant in Vietnam — Lâm Đồng province, completing the bauxite-alumina-aluminum value chain for the first time. The plant, invested by Tran Hong Quan Metallurgy Company with nearly US$1.07 billion, has an initial capacity of 150,000 tonnes per year, set to rise to 450,000 tonnes by Q1 2027. Deputy Prime Minister Phan Văn Giang attended the ceremony, calling it a historic milestone for Vietnam's metallurgical industry. The project is expected to reduce aluminum imports by about $1.5 billion annually and create thousands of jobs.
