The divestment of NTEL and strong debt recovery performance signal improved asset resolution by AMCON, potentially boosting investor confidence in Nigeria's financial system. The Supreme Court judgment strengthens AMCON's recovery powers, which may enhance debt collection efficiency and reduce non-performing loans in the banking sector.
The Nigeria — Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has commenced the divestment of its controlling stake in NTEL, the successor to NITEL (Nigerian company) (NITEL), following a comprehensive transformation program. AMCON Managing Director Gbenga Alade announced the development during a media parley in Lagos, stating that the divestment follows the successful sale of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and aims to attract strategic investors. Alade also revealed that AMCON recovered approximately N165 billion in the first half of 2026, a 64% increase from N107 billion in the same period of 2025, with a low cost-to-recovery ratio of 2.3%. Additionally, AMCON secured a landmark Supreme Court judgment affirming its special legal regime, exemption from stamp duties, and authority to dispose of collateral assets. The corporation rejected calls for its winding down, emphasizing that such decisions rest with its Board and the Nigeria — Central Bank of Nigeria.
