The first phase of the India — Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections was held on July 27, 2026, across 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division. Voting took place in Mirpur, Kotli, and Bhimber districts, with 296 candidates contesting. The election was marred by violence, including a fatal shooting at a polling station in LA-9 Kotli-II Nakyal, where a Pakistan — Pakistan People s Party (PPP) worker was killed. Clashes between rival party workers also occurred, and a ballot box was snatched and set ablaze. The election is being held in three phases due to security concerns, with subsequent phases scheduled for August 2 and August 10. The Pakistan — Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) called for a boycott, and internet restrictions were imposed. Major political parties including PML-N, PPP, IPP, and PTI-backed independents are contesting.
