Wood Mackenzie released a report projecting India's operational data centre capacity to grow from 2.2 GW in 2025 to 12 GW by 2030, a CAGR of about 40%. AI-dedicated capacity is expected to expand nearly 24-fold to 6,546 MW by 2030. The growth is driven by AI adoption, hyperscale cloud investments, and India's digital economy, valued at Rs 32 trillion in 2025. Data centre electricity demand is forecast to grow 20-fold to 191 TWh by 2040, accounting for 7% of total electricity demand. Power reliability has become the primary constraint, with captive generation and renewable PPAs preferred. India — Maharashtra and India — Tamil Nadu currently hold 65% of installed IT load, with expansion expected in India — Andhra Pradesh, India — Telangana, India — Uttar Pradesh, and India — Karnataka. Global hyperscalers like Amazon — Amazon Web Services and Alphabet Inc., along with domestic operator AdaniConneX (2.6 GW pipeline), are investing.
