The potential deal could strengthen Gotion's presence in Europe and provide Volkswagen with capital and expertise for its battery operations. It may also signal a shift in Volkswagen's strategy to partner more closely with Chinese suppliers.
Volkswagen and its Chinese partner Gotion are in advanced talks regarding a possible stake for Gotion in Volkswagen's battery plant in Valencia, Spain, operated by Powerco. The discussions have included high-level visits from Gotion CEO Li Zhen to evaluate the operation. According to a Spanish trade publication, Gotion could acquire a majority stake in a joint venture for the site. Powerco stated it regularly evaluates strategic opportunities but declined to comment on the report. Volkswagen created Powerco to build its own battery business in Europe and reduce reliance on Asian suppliers as it competes with EV rivals like BYD and Tesla. The German automaker is under pressure to cut costs and streamline its investment portfolio.
