Dr. Dakuku Peterside, former Director-General of the Nigeria — Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), delivered a keynote address at a high-level webinar on green maritime practices. The webinar was organized by Naturehedge in collaboration with the Institute of Economic Development (WAGEDI), Gregory University, SSA Hub, and the Sustainable Energy Practitioners Association of Nigeria (SEPAN). Peterside emphasized that decarbonization and sustainable shipping are now a competitive advantage, not just a regulatory obligation. He highlighted the impact of stricter International — International Maritime Organization (IMO) carbon-intensity rules and the expanded European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) on shipping. Practical strategies discussed include voyage optimization, just-in-time port arrivals, alternative fuels (methanol, ammonia, LNG), digital tools, and safety training. Professor Magnus Onuoha announced a follow-up pan-regional workshop in Accra, Ghana. Hermione Manuel, Managing Director of Damen Group South Africa, highlighted hybrid vessel initiatives. The webinar series aims to strengthen Africa's maritime decarbonization capacity.
