The successful production of green hydrogen offshore signals progress in the energy transition, potentially boosting investor sentiment for hydrogen and offshore wind technologies. It may also enhance the reputation of the participating companies as leaders in innovative energy solutions, though commercial-scale impact remains to be seen.

Oil & Gas Renewable Energy Hydrogen

The PosHYdon pilot project has successfully produced green hydrogen on the operational Q13a-A offshore platform in the Dutch North Sea, marking a world first in combining offshore wind power, hydrogen production, and natural gas production at sea. The platform, operated by Eni Energy Netherlands and located about 13 kilometers off the coast of Scheveningen, is the first fully electrified production platform in the Dutch sector. Seawater is converted into demineralized water and then into hydrogen via electrolysis, powered by offshore wind energy. The pilot aims to gain practical experience in integrating offshore energy systems, testing the electrolyzer's response to variable wind output, and evaluating costs, maintenance, and operational performance. Supported by the Dutch Netherlands — Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, EBN, TNO, and a consortium including Eni, DEME Group, Eneco, Gasunie, Nel, TAQA, and others, the project's findings will be analyzed in August and September and shared with the hydrogen sector in the autumn. This milestone demonstrates the potential of reusing existing offshore infrastructure for sustainable hydrogen production, contributing to the future offshore energy system in the North Sea.
