The funding signals continued investor confidence in quantum computing, particularly in novel trapped-ion architectures. Zurich Instruments's success may increase competition in the quantum sector and attract further investment to European Union — European quantum startups.
Zurich Instruments, a Swiss quantum computing startup spun out of ETH Zurich, has raised $25.5 million in a seed funding round led by Quantonation, with participation from Global Forward Capital, Extantia, Firgun Ventures, and all previous investors. The round builds on a $4.2 million pre-seed round in 2025, bringing total funding to $29.7 million. Zurich Instruments is developing trapped-ion quantum processors using a native two-dimensional architecture based on Penning micro-traps and a static magnetic field, which the company claims is easier to scale than conventional one-dimensional designs. The company has built a working demonstrator with a 3x3 array of nine individually controlled ions, fabricated with manufacturing partner Infineon Technologies. Zurich Instruments plans to use the new capital to expand its team (currently 18 employees, up from 4), advance research, and scale chip fabrication toward processors with hundreds of qubits. The company has attracted talent from IonQ, Xanadu Quantum Technologies, and Hamamatsu Photonics. The quantum computing industry is still early, with no architecture yet proven to scale to thousands of qubits needed for industrial applications.
