Bangladesh presidential election set for August 20

Bangladesh's Election Commission announced on August 6 that the presidential election will be held on August 20, following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on July 24 on health grounds. Shahabuddin, a longtime ally of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stepped down nearly two years before the end of his term. The election will be conducted by the Election Commission, with voting scheduled from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Bangladesh — Jatiya Sangsad session hall. Nomination papers will be accepted on August 13, scrutiny on August 16, and withdrawal deadline on August 18. The new president will be elected by the 349 MPs of the 13th Parliament, with the process overseen by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin. Acting Speaker Kayser Kamal and Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed have been involved in finalizing the schedule. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad is serving as Acting President for 90 days, and the election must be completed by October 22. The ruling Bangladesh — Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has not yet announced a candidate. The election marks a constitutional transition following Shahabuddin's resignation.
