The political controversy may increase uncertainty in Nigeria's political environment, potentially affecting investor confidence in governance and institutional independence. However, direct market impact is limited as the event is primarily political and does not involve major economic actors or sectors.
Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Nigeria — African Democratic Congress (ADC), has challenged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Nigeria — Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to release former Nigeria — Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, who has been in ICPC custody since February 19 over alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as governor. Atiku's challenge follows Tinubu's directive to the Nigeria — Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to vacate the freeze on Nigeria — Osun State government accounts, which Atiku argues undermines claims of anti-corruption agencies' independence. Atiku questioned the legal basis for the Osun freeze and accused Tinubu of selective use of executive power. Separately, ADC publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi alleged that el-Rufai's detention is politically motivated to prevent him from participating in the 2027 elections, and warned that Tinubu would be held responsible if anything happens to el-Rufai. El-Rufai faces separate charges by the DSS and ICPC, and his bail application was dismissed.
