This export opens a new international market for India — Assam's dairy products, potentially increasing demand for locally produced milk and boosting income for dairy farmers. It strengthens India's dairy export footprint in neighboring countries and may encourage further value-added dairy exports from the Northeast region.

India — Assam achieved a milestone by exporting its first commercial dairy products to Bhutan. On July 28, 2026, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma flagged off a consignment of 5,627 litres of Purabi ice cream, manufactured by West Assam Milk Producers Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) and marketed by North East Dairy and Foods Limited (NEDFL). The export was facilitated by the India — Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The ice cream, made from milk sourced from India — Assam dairy farmers, will be available in Bhutanese cities including Thimphu, Paro, Phuentsholing, and Wangdue. Union Minister Piyush Goyal hailed the move, stating it will create new income opportunities for Northeast dairy farmers. The World Bank Group-funded APART project supported the expansion of Purabi Dairy's processing capacity. NEDFL plans to explore exports of additional dairy products with longer shelf life.
