Daily Multivitamin Improves Functional Health in Older Adults

The findings could modestly boost consumer interest in multivitamins, potentially benefiting supplement manufacturers and retailers. However, the preliminary nature and modest effect size limit immediate market impact.
Researchers from the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University analyzed data from over 16,000 adults aged 60 and older participating in the COSMOS trial. After three years, those taking a daily multivitamin reported significantly better functional health, including fewer symptoms and less difficulty with daily activities, compared to placebo. The findings were presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, held July 25-28 in National Harbor, Maryland. The study focused on functional health rather than disease prevention, using the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire. Cocoa extract did not improve functional health overall but benefited participants with congestive heart failure. The results are preliminary and not yet peer-reviewed. The study was supported by the United States — National Institutes of Health.
