India cyber fraud cases triple 2020-2024

The Indian government informed Parliament on July 29, 2026, that cyber fraud cases in the country nearly tripled from 10,395 in 2020 to 29,758 in 2024, according to data published by the India — National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). India — Telangana recorded the highest number of cases in 2024 at 18,922, followed by India — Bihar (4,020), India — Maharashtra (2,827), and India — Odisha (1,546). Online banking fraud was the most common category in 2024 with 4,659 cases, followed by credit/debit card fraud (3,829) and marketing/investment fraud (3,044). The Ministry of Home Affairs has established the India — Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) to coordinate efforts. The India — Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS), launched in 2021, has helped save over ₹11,158 crore across more than 32.80 lakh complaints as of June 30, 2026. The government listed several measures to strengthen cyber policing, including the Samanvay platform, Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre, and public awareness campaigns.
