The threat of a boycott could negatively impact Swiggy's revenue and market share in Bengaluru, a key market. If the boycott materializes, it may also affect the broader food delivery industry's relationship with restaurant associations.
The Bangalore Hotels Association (BHA) has warned that hotels affiliated with it and other hospitality bodies in Bengaluru will suspend business with online food delivery platform Swiggy from August 15 if the company fails to resolve issues related to payment transparency, unauthorized deductions, and advertising charges. The association alleges that Swiggy deducts advertisement and promotional charges without consent, lacks a one-click opt-out for ads, and does not disclose all charges separately in payment statements. BHA honorary president P. C. Rao stated that the payout system is not functioning properly, with restaurants sometimes receiving only Rs 40,000-50,000 against payouts of Rs 1 lakh. The association has given Swiggy 15 days to rectify the issues, after which a final decision will be made. Swiggy has not yet responded.
