The partnership signals growing institutional adoption of Bitcoin by nation-states, potentially boosting sentiment for digital assets and asset managers. However, undisclosed terms and regulatory uncertainties may limit immediate market reaction, while Bhutan's reduced Bitcoin reserves could raise questions about its long-term strategy.
On July 30, 2026, 3iQ, a Canadian digital asset manager, and Bhutan — Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a Special Administrative Region in southern Bhutan, announced a strategic partnership. Under the agreement, 3iQ will manage a dedicated mandate backed by a portion of GMC's Bitcoin treasury, establish a long-term presence in Gelephu, and invest in local talent and knowledge transfer. This partnership advances Bhutan's December 2025 pledge to allocate up to 10,000 Bitcoin from national holdings to support GMC's development. The specific amount of Bitcoin under management, fees, custody arrangements, and other commercial terms were not disclosed. GMC selected 3iQ for its institutional expertise and track record. 3iQ is a subsidiary of Coincheck Group, which is listed on NASDAQ. The partnership is the first of several planned milestones as GMC aims to become a digital offshore financial hub. Regulatory details remain unclear, as 3iQ was not listed in GMC's financial services directory as of July 31, and the need for a local licence is uncertain. Bhutan's sovereign Bitcoin holdings have declined from over 13,000 BTC in late 2024 to approximately 5,600 BTC as of July 2026, according to Arkham (cryptocurrency exchange) data.
