The research, led by Katherine Aird and first author Aidan Cole, found that high dietary fructose, comparable to sugary drinks, can also promote spread even without chemotherapy. Using CRISPR screening, they discovered fructose suppresses cholesterol production, weakening cell adhesion. The findings raise questions about statins, which lower cholesterol and may similarly promote cancer cell escape, though the team stresses patients should not stop taking them. The study suggests potential interventions like limiting processed fructose and repurposing an anti-diabetic drug, but clinical confirmation is needed.
