Two new studies conclude that human-caused climate change significantly increased the likelihood and intensity of extreme fire weather conditions that sparked devastating wildfires in Spain and France. World Weather Attribution calculated that climate change made Spain's record-sized inferno 20 times more likely and doubled the chances of extreme fire conditions in France. A separate study in Scientific Reports found that extreme fire weather days in Southern Europe have more than doubled compared to decades ago, and are about 50% more intense. Scientists emphasize that continued fossil fuel burning will worsen fire conditions.
