Researchers at Edith Cowan University's Centre for Precision Health published a study in Alzheimer's & Dementia, the journal of the Alzheimer s Association, examining how the AQP4 gene, which supports the brain's waste-clearing system, interacts with sleep habits to influence Alzheimer's-related brain changes. The study analyzed 13 common AQP4 variants and found that the effects of sleep on grey matter loss and cognitive performance varied depending on the genetic variant. For example, shorter sleep was associated with faster grey matter loss in individuals carrying certain variants, while other variants showed different effects. The findings suggest that personalized prevention strategies considering both genetics and sleep habits may be more effective than a one-size-fits-all approach. The researchers recommended clinical trials incorporating genetic information to test whether improving sleep can reduce inherited vulnerability. They emphasized that the findings need replication in larger and more diverse cohorts and that they are not yet recommending genetic testing.
