Led by Dudley Lamming of the United States — University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, the review suggests that consuming less protein, or fewer specific amino acids such as methionine, isoleucine, and valine, may slow aging by improving metabolism, reducing cellular damage, and preserving healthy cell function. The review highlights the hormone FGF21, which rises when protein intake is low and may increase energy expenditure and improve blood sugar control. While acknowledging that active individuals and certain populations like older adults, pregnant women, and those recovering from illness may need more protein, the authors argue that many sedentary adults consume more protein than necessary, potentially leading to negative health consequences.
