Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Hip Replacement on ITP Patient

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, a government-run hospital in India — Gujarat, India, successfully performed a high-risk total hip replacement on Sangeeta Trivedi, a woman suffering from Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a serious blood disorder characterized by critically low platelet counts. The surgery was performed free of cost after several private hospitals declined to operate due to the high risk of life-threatening bleeding and quoted costs of Rs 3-5 lakh. A multidisciplinary team from the Departments of Orthopaedics, Haematology, Anaesthesia, and the Blood Bank managed the procedure, providing the patient with 5 units of platelets, 1 unit of Fresh Frozen Plasma, and 1 unit of Packed Cell Volume to control bleeding. The surgery was completed safely, and Trivedi is now stable, pain-free, and able to walk independently. This achievement highlights the capability of government hospitals to deliver world-class, complex medical treatment.
