OPEC+ September production increase
Analysis based on 43 articles · First reported Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Aug 03, 2026
The modest production increase is largely symbolic as actual exports remain constrained by the Strait of Hormuz disruptions and Russian infrastructure damage. Oil prices may see limited downside pressure, but the market impact will be clearer once export flows normalize.
On August 2, 2026, seven core OPEC+ members (Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman) agreed in an online meeting to increase oil production by 188,000 barrels per day in September. This increase completes the unwinding of the second of three production-cut packages, and the group is expected to pause further increases for the rest of the year. The decision comes amid ongoing disruptions to exports from the Gulf, Russia, and Kazakhstan due to the Middle East war and Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian infrastructure. Many members cannot meet their targets due to capacity declines, and the group faces difficult negotiations over new quotas for 2027. The UAE's exit from OPEC in May has highlighted internal tensions.
