Memory chip prices have surged, boosting revenues and stock prices for major producers like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology, while raising costs for downstream electronics and automotive manufacturers. The prolonged shortage through 2028 could sustain high prices, benefiting chipmakers but pressuring consumer electronics margins and potentially dampening demand.
A global shortage of memory chips, dubbed 'RAMaggedon', has driven up prices for RAM and DRAM by five to six times year-over-year, according to TrendForce. The shortage stems from chipmakers pivoting production to high-bandwidth memory (HBM) to meet surging AI demand. Samsung Electronics' CFO warned shortages will deepen in 2027 and remain tight through 2028. The top three memory makers—Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology—have seen huge profits and share price gains. Yangtze Memory Technologies (CXMT) made its market debut in Shanghai, becoming mainland China's most valuable company. Consumers in China — Hong Kong and Tokyo face higher prices for laptops, smartphones, and PC components, with some delaying purchases or downgrading. Automakers warn of rising costs for in-vehicle systems, potentially pushing up vehicle prices. Analysts note CXMT may gain late-mover advantages in conventional RAM and DRAM markets.
