The India — Government of Delhi has notified the Scheme for Payment of Compensation on Account of Death of Prisoners in Delhi Prison, 2025, providing compensation of Rs 5-7.5 lakh to families of prisoners who die unnatural deaths in Delhi prisons. The scheme, framed per India — National Human Rights Commission of India guidelines, covers deaths from inmate clashes, alleged torture or assault by prison personnel (Rs 7.5 lakh), and negligence or suicide (Rs 5 lakh). It excludes natural deaths, illness, escape, and disasters. Claims are reviewed by a committee headed by the India — Director General of Prisons. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the scheme, which was initially proposed by the India — Aam Aadmi Party government in September 2024 and sent to the India — List of lieutenant governors of Delhi for approval.
