Uganda unveils Yonatan Netanyahu statue

On August 1, 2026, Uganda's military, led by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, unveiled a statue of Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, the elder brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, at the old terminal of Uganda — Entebbe International Airport. The monument commemorates Yonatan Netanyahu's role in the 1976 Operation Entebbe, a hostage rescue mission in which he was the only Israeli commando killed. The ceremony highlighted the transformation of Uganda-Israel relations from the era of Idi Amin's dictatorship to a partnership based on mutual trust and cooperation. The event also paid tribute to the hostages who died during the operation. The statue serves as a symbol of the enduring ties between the two countries and a recognition of a defining moment in military history.
