Researchers at Nagoya University in Japan, led by Hiroyuki Mizoguchi and Kiyofumi Yamada, published a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America showing that orexin neurons in the hypothalamus are crucial for sustaining motivated behavior. Using genetically modified 'orexin-Cre' rats, they demonstrated that activating these neurons increased effort in a progressive ratio task, while suppressing them reduced motivation.
