Suu Kyi meets Red Cross official

On August 3, 2026, Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to Myanmar, in Naypyitaw. This was the first publicized meeting between Suu Kyi and a foreign official since the 2021 military coup. The Myanmar government released photographs of the meeting, including one of Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake, offering a rare glimpse of the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate. The ICRC confirmed the visit and stated that Suu Kyi was able to speak with de Baecque in private. The meeting comes amid ongoing international pressure for independent verification of Suu Kyi's health and well-being, and ahead of President Min Aung Hlaing's scheduled visit to Thailand. Suu Kyi has been detained since the February 2021 coup, serving a reduced sentence of 18 years on charges her allies say are politically motivated. Her son, Aung San Suu Kyi, welcomed the meeting as an important first step. The Myanmar — National unity government and various ASEAN members have called for her release or access to her, but Myanmar has so far refused. Analysts suggest the meeting may be a strategic move by Min Aung Hlaing to gain international legitimacy and improve Myanmar's diplomatic standing.
