IBM's 2026 Cost of a Data Breach Report, conducted by Hudson Institute, reveals that one in four malicious breaches are AI-enabled, a 56% increase over last year, costing an average of $6 million. The global average breach cost is $4.99 million. In India, the average breach cost reached a record Rs 25.5 crore, up 15.9% from Rs 22 crore, with 39,500 records compromised on average. AI-generated attacks accounted for 26% of malicious breaches in India. Organizations without AI and security automation paid significantly more (Rs 31.6 crore) than those with extensive deployment (Rs 21.3 crore). Critical infrastructure sectors, especially financial services and energy, face higher AI-driven risk. The report highlights the growing economic imbalance where attacks are cheaper to launch but breaches are more expensive to remediate, and emphasizes the need for AI integration across the security lifecycle.
