The British Raj — All-India Muslim League (PML-N) has secured a majority in the India — Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, which were held in phases due to security concerns. The final phase took place on August 10, 2026, with voting in four constituencies in Poonch district. PML-N won 24 of the 34 seats decided in the first two phases and later claimed 25 seats, with expectations of a two-thirds majority after reserved seats for women are filled. The party is set to form the regional government for the first time in a decade. The elections were marred by protests and clashes led by the outlawed Pakistan — Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), which called for a boycott over 12 reserved seats for displaced people from Indian-controlled Kashmir. The Pakistan — Pakistan People s Party (PPP) alleged rigging and violence, while the Pakistan — Election Commission of Pakistan maintained the process was transparent. PML-N adviser Rana Sanaullah predicted a two-thirds majority and welcomed Sajid Iqbal, who joined PML-N after winning his seat.
