The acquisition is expected to strengthen Rail Modal Group's growth prospects and expand its infrastructure capabilities, potentially benefiting the agricultural logistics sector. InfraRed's investment signals confidence in the intermodal rail and export logistics market, which may positively influence investor sentiment toward infrastructure and logistics assets.
Sun Life Financial, a London-based infrastructure asset manager, announced on August 3, 2026 that one of its value-add funds has acquired a majority stake in Rail Modal Group (RMG), a U.S. inland intermodal rail terminal and export logistics platform. Financial terms were not disclosed. RMG, founded in 2018 by Greg Oberting, operates four large-scale terminals in the U.S. Midwest and Plains, connecting agricultural producers with the North American Class I rail network and West Coast ports. The company has shipped over 1,200 unit trains since inception, equivalent to approximately 200 million truck miles. InfraRed plans to invest in expanding capacity and resilience at RMG's existing terminals, broadening service capabilities, and developing additional locations. Greg Oberting will retain an investment and continue as CEO. InfraRed is part of SLC Management, the institutional alternatives business of Sun Life.
