Increased domestic coal production reduces India's reliance on imports, potentially lowering coal prices and improving energy security. This supports the coal mining sector and related industries, while conserving foreign exchange.
In July 2026, India's captive and commercial coal mines produced 14.78 million tonnes, a 9.61% year-on-year increase, with dispatches reaching 17.49 million tonnes. Cumulative production for the financial year up to July stood at 63.16 million tonnes, up from 59.42 million tonnes in the same period of FY26 and 53.72 million tonnes in FY25. Cumulative dispatches rose to 70.14 million tonnes, compared to 66.02 million tonnes in FY26 and 45.97 million tonnes in FY25. The India — Ministry of Coal attributed the growth to improved operational efficiency, enhanced mining productivity, and better utilisation of mining capacities. The ministry stated that the sustained rise in domestic output is expected to reduce dependence on imported coal, strengthen supply chain resilience, conserve foreign exchange, and support the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The ministry affirmed its commitment to further unlocking the sector's potential through progressive policy interventions, regulatory oversight, and stakeholder support.
