Adeleke campaign petitions NHRC over police abuses

Ahead of the August 15 Nigeria — Osun State governorship election, the Imole Campaign Council of Governor Ademola Adeleke petitioned the India — National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) in Abuja, alleging widespread human rights violations, politically motivated arrests, and abuse of police powers by the Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force. The campaign's spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused the police of targeting Adeleke's supporters, claiming that several members had been arbitrarily arrested and detained across the country. He alleged that the Nigeria — Osun State Commissioner of Police was initially redeployed, leading to the release of 26 detained members, but was later reinstated under pressure. The campaign also cited the arrest of Popoola Alaba, an Nigeria — Accord Party candidate, who was detained in Abuja on allegations of armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms, with no incriminating items reportedly recovered. The petition called on the International — Inspector general to ensure neutrality and on President Bola Tinubu to prevent security agencies from being used for political intimidation. The Nigeria — Accord Party, through its National Chairman Maxwell Mgbudem, endorsed Adeleke's re-election and urged the Nigeria — Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a credible election. The Nigeria — Nigeria Police Force had not responded to the allegations at the time of reporting.
