Amid a deepening hunger crisis in Somalia, the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) is using artificial intelligence tools in its HungerMap Live platform to better target food assistance. The AI analyzes data on food insecurity, climate, conflict, and market prices to predict where hunger will worsen, allowing WFP to pre-position aid. In the Burhakaba District, WFP used these tools to provide food assistance to 48,000 people and nutrition support to 3,000 women and children. In June, WFP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) added Somalia to their list of 'hunger hotspots of highest concern' alongside northeast Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, and Palestine. WFP's office in Somalia requires an additional $192 million by January 2027 to reach all in need. The agency can currently reach only one in ten of the 6 million Somalis facing crisis-level food insecurity. WFP released HungerMap Live 2.0 in April, introducing predictive AI features to help governments and field offices act before crises worsen.
