The guidelines may influence prescribing practices for GLP-1 medications in women of reproductive age, potentially affecting sales of drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide. However, the impact is likely modest as the guidance does not change approved indications and mainly underscores existing caution.
An international team of researchers, including Dr. Shahrad Taheri of Marshall University, published the first comprehensive clinical review and consensus guidelines on the use of incretin-based medications (GLP-1 and related drugs) across the reproductive lifespan. The guidelines, published in Obesity Reviews, the journal of the World Obesity Day, analyzed 34 studies to address fertility, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and postpartum health. The review found no increased risk of major congenital anomalies from inadvertent early pregnancy exposure but emphasized substantial evidence gaps. It noted potential fertility benefits for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PMOS) and obesity, but insufficient evidence to support use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The authors highlighted the need for contraceptive counseling and further research, concluding that nearly half of clinically important questions remain unanswered.
