The settlement removes some litigation risk for ByteDance — TikTok Shop, potentially reducing its legal exposure and uncertainty. However, the broader litigation against Meta, Alphabet Inc., and Snap continues, keeping regulatory and legal overhang on the social media sector.

Social Media Technology

ByteDance — TikTok Shop has agreed to settle three bellwether lawsuits brought by teenagers who accused social media platforms of being addictive and harming their mental health. The settlements are confidential and subject to finalization of written agreements, according to plaintiffs' lawyer Joseph VanZandt. The cases were among about 3,300 consolidated in United States — California state court before Judge Carolyn Kuhl. Claims against Meta Platforms, Alphabet Inc.'s Google — YouTube, and Snap Inc.'s Snap Inc. will continue, with a trial scheduled in October. The settling plaintiffs are S.J., P.M.Y., and K.D.B., who alleged self-harm, anxiety, depression, addiction, and eating disorders. This follows a March trial that resulted in a $4.2 million verdict against Meta and a $1.8 million verdict against Alphabet Inc., while ByteDance — TikTok Shop and Snap settled that case before trial. Another 2,600 similar cases are pending in United States — California federal court, and nearly every state attorney general has sued social media companies.
