The event is unlikely to have a direct impact on oil and gas markets, as it focuses on media training and public communication. However, improved reporting could enhance transparency and public understanding of the sector, potentially influencing investor confidence and policy discussions in the long term.
The Nigeria — Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) launched a two-day capacity-building programme in Lagos to train about 50 journalists and media stakeholders on specialised energy reporting. The initiative aims to improve the accuracy, balance, and depth of reporting on Nigeria's oil and gas sector, which accounts for about 65% of government revenue, over 85% of export earnings, and roughly 90% of foreign exchange earnings. PTDF Executive Secretary Shuaibu Shehu Aliyu, represented by Dupe Kay-Hambolu, emphasised the media's role as a strategic partner in shaping public discourse and promoting transparency. The training, organised in partnership with BetterWays Nigeria Limited., covered the structure of the Nigerian oil and gas value chain, regulatory frameworks, local content dynamics, energy transition issues, and investigative reporting techniques. Group Managing Director of BetterWays, Victor Dare, highlighted the sector's strategic importance and the need for journalists to understand technical complexities. The programme is part of PTDF's broader mandate to develop human capacity in the oil and gas industry, extending beyond industry professionals to include media practitioners.
