Professor Annapurni Subramaniam, Director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) and also Director of the India — Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences (CeNS), has been awarded the COSPAR Vikram Sarabhai Medal for 2026. The medal was presented on 3 August 2026 at the 46th COSPAR Scientific Assembly in Florence, Italy. It is awarded jointly by the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) and the India — ISRO (ISRO) every two years to scientists from developing countries for outstanding contributions to space research. Subramaniam is the first Indian woman scientist and only the fourth Indian to receive this honour, following Udupi Ramachandra Rao (1996), Gurbax Singh Lakhina (2014), and Anil Bhardwaj (2024). Her research focuses on stellar populations, star clusters, and ultraviolet astronomy, and she served as calibration scientist for the Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) aboard AstroSat. She is also involved in the Thirty Meter Telescope project and has received several national awards, including the Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar in 2024.
