A consortium led by Swiss-Japanese firm Kanadevia Inova, including Moroccan energy company Nareva and Japan's Itochu, signed a concession agreement with Morocco — Casablanca's city government to build a $1.5 billion waste-to-energy plant. The facility, to be constructed by Moroccan firm Somagec, will process about 1.5 million metric tons of waste annually and generate around 115 MW of electricity, enough for nearly 1 million people. It will be located next to the Mediouna landfill and aims to reduce methane emissions and other environmental impacts. Construction is expected to begin by end of 2026, with full operations by mid-2030. The consortium has secured power purchase agreements with Morocco — National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water and Morocco — SRM Casablanca-Settat, and plans to finance the project with local debt. The plant will create about 140 permanent jobs and employ around 1,240 workers during construction. Environmental groups have raised concerns about incineration and recycling impacts.
