The leadership transition signals continuity and stability in the South African REIT sector, which is already experiencing strong returns and capital inflows. The sector's robust performance and the association's international integration through the Global REIT Alliance are likely to sustain investor confidence and support further growth in listed property investments.
Jackie van Niekerk, CEO of Attacq Limited, succeeded Estienne de Klerk as chairperson of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (SA REIT Association) at its AGM in Johannesburg on 20 July 2026. De Klerk, Group CEO of Growthpoint Properties, stepped down after leading the association through the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent recovery. The handover coincides with a strong period for South African REITs, which delivered total returns of 38.6% in 2025 and 35.8% in 2024, with market capitalisation exceeding R350 billion and over R11.4 billion raised in fresh capital during 2025. The association also restructured its committees into three delivery portfolios effective August 2026, and highlighted its international engagement through the launch of the Global REIT Alliance in September 2025. Van Niekerk, a past president of the South African Property Owners Association, will focus on engaging with debt, equity, and international markets, strengthening research, and aligning with the JSE Limited on disclosure and sustainability.
