The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, India's flagship rooftop solar programme, has crossed 50.06 lakh household installations, a major milestone achieved in just over two years since its launch in February 2024. This compares with only 7.94 lakh installations in the preceding decade. The scheme, with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore, is adding one lakh households every six days, with daily installations rising from 5,038 in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 in July 2026. July 2026 alone saw 5.06 lakh installations, the highest monthly figure. The India — Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has released Rs 28,024 crore in subsidies via Direct Benefit Transfer, enabling nearly 19 lakh households to receive zero electricity bills. Over 12 lakh households earned Rs 421 crore from selling surplus power in FY 2024-25. The scheme has also expanded to low-income households through the Utility Led Aggregation model, with 1.6 lakh installations for PMAY, BPL and SC/ST households, and concessional loans at 5.75% sanctioned for 21.87 lakh applicants. Cumulatively, 14.8 GW of rooftop solar capacity has been commissioned, and 1.06 lakh government buildings have been solarised. The programme has created an ecosystem of 34,219 registered vendors and trained over 2.32 lakh people. The scheme aims to cover one crore households by March 2027.
