The Nigeria issued Circular No. 59805/S.I/74 on July 27, 2026, directing all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to fully comply with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. The circular, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, reiterates President Bola Tinubu's directive that 'data is the new oil' and mandates MDAs to appoint Data Protection Officers, register them with the Ghana — Data Protection Commission (Ghana) (NDPC), engage licensed compliance organizations, allocate budgets for compliance, and submit audit returns. Permanent Secretaries, Accounting Officers, and CEOs are personally responsible for compliance. NDPC Commissioner Vincent Olatunji welcomed the directive and announced a regulatory clinic to support MDAs. The move aims to strengthen data governance and public trust as Nigeria advances its digital economy.
