The EMI licence enhances Bybit's regulatory standing in Europe, potentially increasing customer trust and adoption of its payment and crypto services, which could positively impact its market position. The move may also pressure competitors to secure similar licences, influencing the broader cryptocurrency and fintech sectors in the EU.
Bybit — Bybit Payments GmbH, an Austrian subsidiary of cryptocurrency exchange Bybit, has been granted an Electronic Money Institution (EMI) licence by Austria's United Arab Emirates — Capital Market Authority (United Arab Emirates) (FMA) on August 4, 2026. This licence allows Bybit — Bybit Payments GmbH to provide regulated electronic money and payment services across the European Economic Area through the Bybit.eu platform. The EMI licence complements the existing Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR) authorisation held by Bybit EU GmbH, which provides crypto-asset services. Bybit maintains a clear separation between the two entities to comply with regulatory requirements, with Bybit — Bybit Payments GmbH handling fiat-linked payment services and Bybit EU GmbH handling crypto-asset services. The licence enables Bybit — Bybit Payments GmbH to develop future payment capabilities such as person-to-person payments, open banking, merchant solutions, and payment cards, subject to further approvals. This move strengthens Bybit's regulated presence in Europe and supports its long-term commitment to the region, aligning with Europe's evolving regulatory framework for digital assets and financial services.
