Nigeria approves health facility electrification framework

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee of the Nigeria Power for Health Initiative, approved a financing framework and institutional reforms to electrify at least 30% of the country's health facilities by the end of 2027. The decision was announced on August 4, 2026, by Minister of State for Health Adekunle Salako. The framework aims to mobilize investments via public-private partnerships, prioritizing energy-as-a-service models. The committee also cleared eight private sector proposals for further engagement, selected from about 70 submissions. The Nigeria — Rural Electrification Agency has already installed containerized solar systems in about 100 hospitals. The initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu in December 2025, is jointly coordinated by the Nigeria — Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria — Ministry of Power (Nigeria). It will be institutionalized through dedicated budgetary provisions and a Project Coordination Unit.
