The launch strengthens Rohm's position in the emerging terahertz technology market, potentially opening new revenue streams in sensing and imaging applications. It may also spur adoption of THz technology across industries, benefiting Rohm and its partners while increasing competition in the semiconductor sector.

Rohm Co., Ltd. announced the development of a 2nd-generation terahertz (THz) wave oscillation device using resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs). The device, available via the RTD-EVK-G2 evaluation kit, offers approximately four times higher output power (up to 40 microwatts) than the 1st-generation product while maintaining a compact 0.5 x 0.5mm chip size and the industry's smallest footprint. The kit, priced at $3,300, enables companies and research institutions to evaluate THz wave oscillation and detection in a compact, low-cost environment. Rohm has collaborated with the International Space Science Institute and University of Osaka since the late 2000s. Sales are planned to begin in August 2026. The higher output improves detectability for applications such as non-destructive testing, medical imaging, and high-resolution radar sensing.
