HII and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries are advancing their strategic partnership with a pilot program to implement intelligent mechanized welding equipment at HII's Huntington Ingalls Industries — Ingalls Shipbuilding division. The pilot, which follows a 2025 memorandum of understanding, aims to make welding safer and more efficient by automating unit-fabrication areas that currently rely on manual welding. The systems automatically recognize workpieces, correct welding positions in real time, and capture process data for quality control. Ingalls has ensured compliance with U.S. Navy fabrication standards. The pilot grew out of a three-day technical exchange where Ingalls showcased its hybrid laser welding process and robotics integration. Additional automation initiatives at HII's shipyards include robotic fabrication cells, additive manufacturing, and the High-Yield Production Robotics (HYPR) initiative with AI technology companies.
