Japanese designer Satoshi Nakamoto, CEO of Tripod Design, has pioneered 'micropower collection' (MPC), a method of harvesting small electrical currents from soil and other moist materials using electrodes, based on the voltaic pile principle. He has built two test facilities in Hitachi-ota, Japan: 'Ku-An', which uses 1,500 wooden boxes of soil to power 800 LEDs, and 'Lu-An', which uses 2,000 plastic cylinders to generate 100 watts, enough to power a rice cooker. Nakagawa envisions applications in off-grid settings, disaster relief, and low-power sensors. However, experts like Masayuki Nakajima, professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, note that the output is significantly inferior to conventional batteries, though they acknowledge the aesthetic and emotional appeal of the installations. The technology produces no CO2 and is not weather-dependent, but its practical scalability remains limited.
