Air Pollution Linked to Rheumatoid Arthritis Flares

A prospective cohort study conducted in South Korea, led by Eun Bong Lee at Seoul National University, tracked 1,070 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients across 12,583 outpatient visits from 2021 to 2024. The study, published in Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, found that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) was associated with increased disease activity and a higher risk of RA flares, particularly with prolonged exposure exceeding two weeks. PM2.5 was the strongest and most consistent pollutant among six measured. The findings suggest that air pollution, especially PM2.5, may act as a modifiable environmental trigger for RA flares. The study was accompanied by an editorial from Jeffrey A. Sparks of Mass General Brigham, Brigham and Women s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, who highlighted the clinical and public health implications. Josef Smolen, editor-in-chief of the journal, called it an important wake-up call. The research underscores the need for patients to monitor air quality and for policymakers to consider pollution's impact on autoimmune diseases.
