A study led by the University of Zurich, with collaborators from United States — NASA and the University of Münster, found that Arctic fires occur 2.5 times more often in areas illuminated by artificial light at night, a proxy for human activity, than in climatically similar unlit areas. The research, published in Communications Earth & Environment, analyzed fire occurrence across the pan-Arctic from 2001 to 2013. The findings indicate that human activity, including settlements, roads, and industrial operations such as oil, gas, and mining, contributes to increased ignition risk, interacting with climate factors like warming and drought. The study highlights regional variations in fire occurrence, suggesting that fire management and prevention can mitigate risks. Arctic fires have global implications, releasing carbon and accelerating permafrost thaw, which can intensify climate change.
