On July 29, 2026, the India — University Grants Commission (India) granted Gujarat University Category II Graded Autonomy under the UGC (Categorisation of Universities [Only] for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018. This makes Gujarat University the first and only state university in India — Gujarat to receive this status. The autonomy allows the university to introduce new academic programmes, departments, schools, and specialised centres without prior UGC approval. It can also launch industry-oriented diploma and certificate courses aligned with the National Skills Qualification Framework, appoint foreign faculty up to 20% of approved strength, admit international students up to 20% of sanctioned intake, and expand offerings through Open and Distance Learning. Education Minister Pradyuman Vaja congratulated the university community, linking the achievement to the vision of Viksit India — Gujarat and Viksit Bharat @2047, and credited the university's academic excellence and implementation of the National Education Policy 2020.
