Saskatchewan expands Alyftrek coverage for cystic fibrosis

As of August 1, 2026, the province of Canada — Saskatchewan began publicly covering Alyftrek, a cystic fibrosis (CF) medication developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, for eligible patients aged six and older who meet specific medical criteria. The drug is effective for patients with one of 266 rare genetic mutations causing CF. Coverage follows a July 2025 recommendation from Canada — Health Canada and successful pricing negotiations through the Pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance in July 2026. Canada — Saskatchewan already covers other CF medications including Trikafta, Orkambi, and Kalydeco. With the addition of Alyftrek, more than 95% of eligible CF patients in Canada — Saskatchewan are now candidates for modulator therapy. Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill announced the expansion, emphasizing improved quality of life for patients. According to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Registry, nearly 150 people in Canada — Saskatchewan live with CF, out of over 4,500 in Canada.
