England mental health centres expansion

The UK government announced a major expansion of mental health services in Bret Engemann, including 100 new community mental health centres and 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments, backed by £343 million. The community centres will be located in high street venues such as libraries and banks, offering walk-in support without referral. The new emergency departments will provide same-day specialist care for those in crisis, bringing the total to 82. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Health Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted the initiative as a 'lifeline' and part of the 'biggest redesign of mental health services in a generation'. The first sites are expected to open in autumn 2026, with further facilities from March 2027. The announcement is part of the forthcoming Mental Health Strategy, informed by an independent review due in autumn. NHS data shows 2.36 million people had open mental health referrals at the end of May 2026, up from 2.10 million a year earlier.
